Do you have a clear view of the way you are leading currently? As I describe in my concept “Positive Insight”, this includes how you lead yourself, lead others and lead in situations.
Getting to know your current values, behaviours, habits and identity is a good starting point. It’s the foundation of your self-awareness and also how you manage yourself.
Authentic Leadership
Much is said now of the importance of being an Authentic Leader. I agree that showing your true character, allowing for some vulnerability and admitting mistakes, are all part of building integrity and trust. Leaders are human and people respect that.
Being the best you in the future
I also think there is a place for not only being authentic, but also in striving to be a better version of yourself as a leader. This is not about fundamentally changing your personality, but modifying and improving your behaviours and your leadership identity.
Leadership Philosophy
There are several things to consider in building your Leadership Philosophy – The leader you wish to be.
- Which leaders do you admire? What values do they demonstrate? How can you build their style into what you do?
- What leadership values would you like to develop as a guide for your path as a leader?
- Why do you want to be a leader?
- How do you want to treat the people you lead?
- How do you want to be seen as a leader? What example do you want to set?
This is all part of developing a “Leadership Philosophy” to provide clear direction for you to grow as a leader. Without it, you have no path to follow and no guide.
I have developed a first version of a PI Leadership Insight Diagnostic, which I am currently happy to provide to you to help you build your self awareness and Leadership Philosophy.
