There is one overriding reason Andy Murray beat Novak Djokovic to break the 77 year old Wimbledon jinx. His “Why” was bigger than Djokovic’s.
We all need a big “Why” in life and in our businesses. Why do we get up every morning and persevere through the ups and downs? Some people’s “Why” is not big enough so they give up. Around 80% of businesses will fail in the first 5 years. A big factor in this is that their “Why” was not big enough.
Your “Why” is a key part of your business strategy. It can encompass what you want to contribute to the people you work for and with, what you want to be known for, what it can mean to your life and the lives of your loved ones. Your Vision and Purpose needs to be clearly defined to support this.
Your “Values” are also important in this process. What are they key principles by which you will be guided and anyone working with you must be guided by too? This is the compass for your journey.
Once you have established your “Why” and your “Values”, you need to establish your “What” in terms of your Mission. What will mean you have accomplished your “Why”? To know you are one of the best in your field do you want to be the top X in your area? The top X in the country?
Your Mission will be based around some lofty goals for the long term – 10, 20 or 30 years ahead.
Your Mission is then broken down into shorter term goals. The “How” all this will be achieved. The smallest of these being the 90 day goals that will drive your 90 day plan.
These will be associated with deadlines so you know the “When” various actions must take place.
Once you have built this, the final and most important part is the “Who”. For a business to be built for future success and happiness you cannot do this alone. There will be people you can partner with, talk to, outsource work to and employ. They will be vital to the achievement of your Vision. They will hopefully have a big “Why” in their lives and you can work together to fulfill each others.
I work with clients on this all the time and I passionately believe that the long term Vision and Values, combined with 90 day plans, are vital to success and happiness in business.
This is one of the 10 vital rules to achieve success and happiness in business.
